Music Arts 4100 W Grand Ave, Unit 207 Chicago, IL
music@music-arts.artIf what could be called sound art and what could be called music have been, at least in part, curtailed by competing processes of marginalization (art institutions lending legitimizing credence to the former but dismissing the latter—popular listenership operating much in reverse), then our intent could be described as the reassertion of a continuity between these categories, or, at least, a toying with the imposition of any discursive boundary between them. Our hope in perverting music art toward a playful notion of non-genre is less to bypass genre altogether and more to recognize genre, as far up the chain as sound art and music, as socially imposed upon works rather than inherent within, or positioned by, those works. At its core, Music Arts is an excuse to support the work of artists we believe in, to provide a testing ground for the composition of new forms as well as an audience eager to participate in their presentation.
